The St. Neots site in Cambridge Give Electron An Interesting Challenge

10 Jan 2014

Electron undertook the design and installation of an Enhanced Category 5 cabling infrastructure of several sites for Collins and Aikman Automotive Systems Limited (formerly part of the BTR Group).

The St. Neots site in Cambridge gave Electron an interesting challenge; a remote office from their main site with a requirement for P.C’s to be networked across the 2 sites. The problem facing Electron was how to achieve this with both public highways and private properties between the 2 sites.

In addition, a network link had to be established between the 2 sites within a very short timescale and fall within a low budget. The most common solution would be the installation of a new cable duct for a fibre link.

This would have taken far too long involving excavation across private property and public roads, permission would have to be sought from private land owners and ‘way leave’ to cross a public highway (‘way leave’ can take approximately 28 days before being granted permission). Taking into account the cost and amount of time to install this method, Electron proposed and installed the ideal solution ‘wireless’.

A Data Connection between the 2 sites was achieved with the installation of a longwave antenna linked via a WAVEPOINT access point at each site. The whole installation took just 2 days from start to finish allowing staff to access the main server from both the remote office area and production area.

“As can be seen from this case study, wireless provides a quick, simple and cost effective solution to establishing a local area network, even in remote places”. – Pete Saxton, Installation Manager. For more information on wireless LAN products please call Mark Wood on 07967 666955.
